Favorite CM of Tamil Nadu – Kumaraswami Kamaraj

The Third Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1954-1963, Kumaraswami Kamaraj (1903-1975) was widely known as the "Kingmaker."  He founded the Indian National Congress and for four years, he was its president. The infrastructure of Tamil Nadu developed tremendously because of him and helping the economically weaker sections of society was also something he strived for.

K.Kamaraj played a prominent role in the Indian Independence Movement at the early age of 18. He took part in the epic Salt Satyagraha Movement and as a result, he spent 2 years in jail. Later, India gained its independence when Kamaraj was 44 years old.

Despite not having completed school, he provided free education for the poor after taking over as chief minister and the free Midday Meal Scheme was introduced by him as well.

The Mid-day Meal focuses on improving nutrition in school children. The scheme achieves this by providing students with free lunches. At least 120,000,000 children are served meals in 1,265,000 schools. It is a constitutional right to provide "adequate nutritious food" to children.

Many changes came about in the state of Tamil Nadu after K. Kamaraj took the role of Chief Minister. He opened new schools to make travel easier for children. Every village and every panchayat had a primary school and/or a high school. His goal was to wipe out illiteracy by providing free education until grade 11. He increased the education rate to 37% which was a big step since the rate during British rule was only 7%. During Kamaraj's governance, many irrigation schemes were carried out as well.

A thing called the Kamaraj Plan was introduced in 1963. Kamaraj suggested the Congress Leaders to involve themselves in organizational work. The plan came about to create dedication in leaders to important objectives and clear their minds from the enticement of power.

After Nehru's death, he declined the chance to become Prime Minister and was responsible for bringing Lal Bahadur Shastri and then Indira Gandhi to power. For this, he was known as the kingmaker. In 1976, K. Kamaraj was posthumously given the Bharat Ratna – the highest civilian award in India.

He was undoubtedly the greatest and my favorite CM. His love and sacrifice is in the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu and will be remembered forever.
