24th August - Independence Day of Ukraine

19 years ago on the 24th of August, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) signed the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine declaring the nation free from Soviet rule.  The second largest country of Europe after Russia, Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe and shares its borders with Russia, Poland, Slovakia, Moldova, and Romania.

In 1917, after the invasion of Bolsheviks – a radical Marxist group founded by Lenin – Ukraine declared itself independent. But, Ukraine has divided again between Poland and Bolshevik-occupied Russia. The latter territory became the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic – a puppet state of the Bolsheviks.

At the beginning of WWII, after Germany (ruled then by the Nazis) was excluded from the League of Nations, the USSR – present-day Russia – was invaded by the Germans in 1941. Ukraine, on the other hand, battled against both the Nazis and the Soviets. In 1954, Crimea, previously a part of Russia, was handed over to Ukraine.

The Soviet Union which comprised of countries like Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Kazakhstan among others, dissolved in 1991. On the 1st of December, 1991 Ukraine was declared independent after a referendum. Independence Day is officially celebrated on the 24th of August to commemorate the signing by the Parliament.

Ukraine has made a lot of advancements since then in the technology sector. Professionals began creating software companies after the dissolution of the USSR. The biggest outsourcing IT company – SoftServe – which was founded in 1993, is a Ukrainian IT company. E-commerce, cloud computing and Big Data are some of the things that this company deals with.

Another software development company Ciklum – having 24 offices all over the world – was also founded in Kyiv, Ukraine. Some popular apps that are still being used today were developed in Ukraine. These include Snapchat filters which were developed in 2015 by a startup in Odessa called Looksery. Grammarly, a website that helps detect grammatical errors and plagiarism was also founded by Ukrainian developers.

Independence Day in Ukraine is celebrated by a flag hoisting ceremony followed by a performance of national songs. A marathon called the Vyshyvanka Run also takes place on this day.

Today, to celebrate independence, there will be a concert in Lviv, an Open-air concert and the continuation of the International Short Film Festival “Wiz-Art” which will conclude on the 25th of August.
